Last checked 1 November 2026. All 8 published Dublin oil service prices re-read at their source today; OFTEC and Grant read today.

About 9% of Dublin homes heat with oil, roughly 45,800 households (CSO Census 2022, our sum), most of them in north County Dublin. An oil boiler needs a service at least once a year by an OFTEC-registered technician, and published Dublin prices for that run €80 to €220.

It isn't RGI work: oil isn't gas, so the gas register doesn't apply. Bord Gáis Energy doesn't service oil boilers.

How often does an oil boiler need a service?

At least once a year. OFTEC, which registers oil heating technicians, recommends heating equipment is serviced "at least once a year by an OFTEC registered technician" (OFTEC, 21 July 2021). On a service the technician cleans and inspects the boiler, replaces worn parts, checks for flue gas leaks, which can include carbon monoxide, and looks for visible damage to the oil tank (same source).

Who services an oil boiler?

An OFTEC-registered technician. OFTEC's competent person scheme operates in the UK and the Republic of Ireland; its technicians take an approved training course and assessment and are inspected regularly, and the business they work for is audited (oftec.org). Search the register on OFTEC's find a technician page.

The national energy companies don't do it. "Bord Gáis Energy does not currently service oil boilers" (Bord Gáis Energy), and Energia's service excludes oil boilers (Energia).

Listing an engineer here doesn't mean it's the engineer we pass your request to. What's in an oil service, step by step: oil boiler service.

My oil boiler has locked out. What do I do?

Press the reset button once or twice, no more. Grant, which makes oil boilers, says: "try pressing the red lockout button on front of the boiler. Only try this a couple of times", and if the burner still won't light, contact your heating engineer (Grant). Other makers put the button elsewhere: your boiler's manual shows where.

  • Check there's oil in the tank before you press anything.
  • Press the lockout button once or twice, as the maker says, and wait for the burner to start.
  • Still locked out? Stop pressing and ring a technician.
  • Smell of oil, smoke from the flue, or soot round the boiler: switch it off and get it looked at.

What to check on the oil tank

A technician looks the tank over on a service (OFTEC). Between services, walk round it once in a while:

  • Rust, bulges, splits or weeping seams on the tank.
  • Wet patches or a smell of oil on the ground under it.
  • A cracked or loose sight gauge, or a damaged pipe from the tank to the boiler.
  • Tell the technician when they ring, so they come prepared.

How much is a new oil boiler?

That's a replacement job. Dublin prices for a new oil boiler, fitted, are on oil boiler replacement (boilerreplacementdublin.ie). Thinking of an oil combi? See oil combi boilers.

Switching from oil to a heat pump

The €2,000 boiler scrappage grant applies when an oil or gas boiler is removed and a heat pump goes in, as part of SEAI's heat pump grant (SEAI, read 29 October 2026). The grants in full are on boiler grants (boilerreplacementdublin.ie).

Oil

Oil is OFTEC, not RGI

Oil boilers aren't gas work, so the RGI register doesn't apply. OFTEC registers and trains oil heating technicians (oftec.org). Ask the technician for their OFTEC number.

  • New nozzle and filter
  • Combustion test
  • Tank and oil line looked over
  • A written service record

Price, time and who rings

What will it cost?

Most Dublin engineers charge €110–€135 for a gas boiler service, and published oil service prices run €80 to €220 (re-read 1 November 2026). The engineer gives you a price on the phone, before anything is booked.

Is VAT in the price?

Often the price doesn't say. Only 3 of the businesses we checked state it, so ask for the price with VAT.

How long does the service take?

Most gas boiler services take around 45 to 60 minutes, Bord Gáis Energy says. An older boiler, or one in a tight hot press, can take longer.

Does sending this commit me to anything?

No. It's free, and nothing is booked until you agree a price and a time with the engineer.

Will lots of firms ring me?

No. Your details go to one boiler engineer who covers your part of Dublin, not to a list.

What if nobody rings?

Email hello@boilerservicedublin.ie with your area and we'll follow it up.

Is the engineer registered?

By law only a Registered Gas Installer can service a gas boiler. Ask for their RGI number and check it on rgi.ie: how to check. Oil boilers are OFTEC work.
