A gas combi boiler gets the same yearly service as any gas boiler, by a Registered Gas Installer, and most Dublin engineers charge €110–€135 for it (24 published prices, re-read 1 November 2026).

What's different is what the engineer looks at: a combi has its own expansion vessel and pressure relief valve, and it heats your hot water itself, so a fault stops the hot water as well as the heating.

What's different about servicing a combi?

Two parts that matter more on a combi: the expansion vessel and the pressure relief valve. "If you have a combi boiler, you will have an expansion vessel," Vaillant says; it keeps the system's pressure steady as the water heats, and typically lasts 5 to 10 years (Vaillant). The relief valve lets pressure out if it climbs too high. Vaillant's advice is to book a yearly service "so an installer can inspect" both (Vaillant).

  • The pressure. With the heating off, the gauge should read between 1 and 1.5 bar, and stay under 2.5 bar with the heating on (Vaillant). Note your reading before the engineer comes.
  • The expansion vessel. Vaillant says vessels need "periodic draining and recharging as the unit gets older", and that a fault there stops the boiler regulating its pressure properly (Vaillant, Vaillant). Tell the engineer if the pressure swings a lot.
  • The relief valve. It's there to let extra pressure out, and a leaking one may need replacing (Vaillant). Mention any drip you've seen.
  • The hot water side. Heating fine but no hot water points to the diverter valve or the flow sensor. See boiler not giving hot water.

What the engineer checks on any gas combi

A full service covers the same ground on a combi as on a system boiler. Bord Gáis Energy's 19-point list is a fair guide: the flue and ventilation, the fan and heat exchanger, the burner and electrodes, the safety devices, the gas rate and burner pressure, a flue gas analysis, and an RGI conformance certificate at the end (Bord Gáis Energy). The step-by-step version is on gas boiler service.

Oil combi boilers

An oil combi is serviced by an OFTEC-registered technician, not an RGI. Bord Gáis Energy doesn't service oil boilers and Energia's offer excludes them, so it's an independent technician: published Dublin oil service prices run €80 to €220. See oil boiler service. Buying an oil combi is covered on combiboilerinstallation.ie.

Between services: what you can check on a combi

  • Read the gauge. Under 1 bar with the heating off, Bord Gáis Energy says to top it up with the filling loop to about 1 to 1.5 bar, and close the loop fully after (Bord Gáis Energy, Vaillant).
  • Pressure that keeps dropping means a leak or a faulty part. Don't keep topping it up: see boiler losing pressure.
  • In a frost, a combi that won't fire and gurgles may have a frozen condensate pipe. Pour warm water on it, "not boiling, just warm", then reset the boiler (Bord Gáis Energy).
  • Radiators warm at the bottom and cold at the top need bleeding with a radiator key (Bord Gáis Energy).
  • Note any error code on the display: what the codes mean.

The law

Only an RGI works on gas

By law, only a Registered Gas Installer (RGI) can work on a gas boiler in your home (CRU). The register is run by Safe Energy Ireland for the CRU. Ask to see the engineer's RGI ID card, or check their name on rgi.ie.

  • Gas boiler: only an RGI
  • Oil boiler: ask for OFTEC

Is a combi boiler service different from a normal boiler service?

It's the same yearly service, but the engineer pays more attention to the expansion vessel and the pressure relief valve, which every combi has, and to the hot water side.

What pressure should my combi boiler be?

Between 1 and 1.5 bar with the heating off, and under 2.5 bar with the heating on, Vaillant says.

How often should a combi boiler be serviced?

Once a year, by a Registered Gas Installer for a gas combi or an OFTEC-registered technician for an oil combi.

How long does a combi boiler service take?

Most gas boiler services take around 45 to 60 minutes, Bord Gáis Energy says, depending on the type and condition of the boiler.

Who services an oil combi boiler?

Price, time and who rings

What will it cost?

Most Dublin engineers charge €110–€135 for a gas boiler service, and published oil service prices run €80 to €220 (re-read 1 November 2026). The engineer gives you a price on the phone, before anything is booked.

Is VAT in the price?

Often the price doesn't say. Only 3 of the businesses we checked state it, so ask for the price with VAT.

How long does the service take?

Most gas boiler services take around 45 to 60 minutes, Bord Gáis Energy says. An older boiler, or one in a tight hot press, can take longer.

Does sending this commit me to anything?

No. It's free, and nothing is booked until you agree a price and a time with the engineer.

Will lots of firms ring me?

No. Your details go to one boiler engineer who covers your part of Dublin, not to a list.

What if nobody rings?

Email hello@boilerservicedublin.ie with your area and we'll follow it up.

Is the engineer registered?

By law only a Registered Gas Installer can service a gas boiler. Ask for their RGI number and check it on rgi.ie: how to check. Oil boilers are OFTEC work.
