Combi, system or regular boiler
A combi boiler heats water on demand and has no hot water cylinder. A system or regular boiler works with a cylinder, usually in the hot press. All three get the same yearly service. Tell the engineer which one you have when they ring.
Common makes in Dublin homes include Vaillant, Worcester Bosch, Baxi, Ideal and Glow-worm. The make and model are on a sticker on the front or underneath the boiler. Having it ready saves time.
Only use a registered gas installer
In Ireland it is illegal for anyone except a Registered Gas Installer to work on a gas boiler. Every engineer who does our gas work is RGI-registered. You can ask to see their RGI card, or check their name on rgi.ie.
Signs to get it looked at now: a yellow or orange flame, soot around the boiler, the pressure gauge dropping below 1 bar, or a pilot light that keeps going out.
