Signs it's time for a new boiler

  • It's 15 years old or more and breaking down every winter
  • Parts for your model are hard to get or slow to arrive
  • The flame burns yellow or the engineer has flagged it as unsafe
  • Your heating bills keep rising with no change in use
  • The pressure keeps dropping, or you're topping it up every week

What changes the price

  • Type of boiler. Swapping like for like is the simplest job. Changing from a system boiler and cylinder to a combi takes more work.
  • Moving it. A new location means new pipework, a new flue and sometimes a new gas supply run.
  • The flue. Older flues often need replacing to suit a modern condensing boiler.
  • Controls and cleaning. A system flush and new controls are often included, and they protect the new boiler.

What a good quote includes

The boiler make and model, the warranty length, removal of the old boiler, flue and pipework, a system flush, controls, commissioning, and the gas safety certificate on completion. Ask for it in writing.

Questions

How much is a new gas boiler in Dublin?

Across 19 Dublin installers that publish a price, a new gas boiler supplied and fitted starts from €1,850, and the middle starting price is €2,499. Moving the boiler or changing to a combi costs more. See every price we found.

Is there an SEAI grant for a new gas boiler?

No. SEAI has no grant for swapping an old gas boiler for a new gas boiler. The only SEAI heating grant you can use while keeping gas is the €700 heating controls grant, for homes built and occupied before 2011 (SEAI). The €2,000 boiler scrappage grant only applies when an oil or gas boiler is removed and a heat pump goes in, as part of the heat pump grant (SEAI).

How long does a boiler replacement take?

A like-for-like swap is usually done in a day. Moving the boiler or changing to a combi can take two days.

Do I need a registered installer?

Yes. In Ireland a new gas boiler must be installed by a Registered Gas Installer, who certifies the work. Check them on rgi.ie.

Should I repair or replace?

If the boiler is under 10 years old and the fault is a single part, repair usually makes sense. Older boilers with repeat faults are often cheaper to replace than to keep fixing.

Is the quote free?
