Check these before you call
Some "broken" boilers aren't broken. These checks are safe for anyone to do and can save you a call-out fee.
- Look at the pressure gauge. Most sealed systems sit between 1 and 1.5 bar when cold. Below 1 bar, many boilers shut down. Your boiler's manual shows how to top it up. If it keeps dropping, there's a leak somewhere and it needs an engineer.
- Check the thermostat and timer.A change to the clocks, a power cut or flat batteries in a wireless thermostat can switch the heating off without anyone noticing.
- Check the gas is on.If the hob or the gas fire doesn't light either, the problem is the supply or the meter, not the boiler.
- Reset it once. Most boilers have a reset button. If it locks out again straight away, stop pressing it and book a repair.
- In a frost, check the condensate pipe.Condensing boilers drain water through a small plastic pipe, often outside. If it freezes, the boiler stops. Pouring warm, not boiling, water over the pipe usually clears it.
Common faults engineers are called out for
- Losing pressure. A leak in the system, a faulty pressure relief valve or a failing expansion vessel.
- Heating works but no hot water. On a combi, often the diverter valve. On a system boiler, the cylinder thermostat or a zone valve.
- Boiler locks out or shows an error code. Write the code down: it tells the engineer where to start, and sometimes which part to bring.
- Noisy boiler or banging pipes. Often sludge or limescale in the heat exchanger, or air in the system.
- Radiators cold at the bottom. Usually sludge, and a sign the system needs a flush.
Repair or replace?
If the boiler is under ten years old and the fault is one part, repair usually makes sense. If it's 15 years or older, breaking down every winter, or parts for it are slow to arrive, get a price for a new one too. New gas boilers in Dublin start from €1,850 supplied and fitted across 19 installers that publish a price. See boiler replacement in Dublin and new boiler prices.
Smell gas? That isn't a repair booking. Turn off the gas at the meter if you can, don't use light switches, open the windows, leave the house and ring Gas Networks Ireland's emergency line from outside (gasnetworks.ie).
Questions people ask
How much does a boiler repair call-out cost in Dublin?
Published call-out and repair prices in Dublin run €80 to €160, middle figure €115, across 10 engineers. Parts are usually extra, and what the first visit covers varies.
Why does my boiler keep losing pressure?
Usually a leak somewhere in the system, a faulty pressure relief valve or an expansion vessel that has lost its charge. Topping it up gets the heating back, but if it keeps dropping, it needs an engineer.
Is the call-out fee taken off the repair?
Sometimes. Dublin Plumber 24hrs says its call-out is credited against an approved repair, and Bord Gáis Energy waives its call-out fee for customers with its cover. Ask before the engineer sets off.
Can you repair oil boilers?
Yes. Pick "Boiler repair" and say it's oil. Dewar Gas Service publishes oil boiler repairs at €165 and 24 Hour Plumber from €160.
