Last checked 1 November 2026. Read today on the CRU, Gas Networks Ireland and rgi.ie, the register's own site. We're an introduction service, not a gas installer, and hold no RGI registration ourselves.
Search the installer's name on the register at rgi.ie, or search by county and pick your Dublin postal district (rgi.ie). A real RGI is listed there, carries an RGI ID card with their name, registration number, the date it's valid to and a photo, and gives you a Declaration of Conformance certificate after the work.
By law, only a Registered Gas Installer can do gas work in your home, natural gas or LPG (CRU).
Who has to be a Registered Gas Installer?
Anyone who does gas work in your home. The CRU, which regulates gas installers: "You must use a Registered Gas Installer (RGI) to carry out any gas work in your home. This law applies to both natural gas or LPG gas" (cru.ie). Gas Networks Ireland spells out what counts: having a gas appliance or pipework "installed, serviced, repaired or removed" (gasnetworks.ie). A yearly boiler service is gas work, so it's RGI work. Safe Energy Ireland: "It is illegal for anybody other than a Registered Gas Installer to service your boiler" (rgi.ie).
How do I check an RGI on rgi.ie?
On the register's search page (rgi.ie/registered-installers, read 1 November 2026):
- Open the register. Go to rgi.ie and choose Search by Name or Search by County.
- Search by name. Type the installer's name, or the business name, exactly as it's on their van, card or quote.
- Or search by area. Pick Domestic as the type of installer, then search by county, Dublin postal district or outside Ireland. Pick your Dublin district to see who's registered for it.
- Open their entry. Each name opens the installer's details. Check the name matches the person coming to your door.
- Match the card. When they arrive, ask to see the RGI ID card and check the name and number against the register.
What does an RGI ID card show?
The installer's name, their registration number, the date the card is valid to, and a photo. Registration numbers take the form R1234 (selectra.ie, updated 5 September 2026, read 1 November 2026). A card that's out of date, or a name that isn't on the register, means don't let the work start.
RGI or RGII: is there a difference?
No, it's the same register under its old name. The Register of Gas Installers of Ireland (RGII) ran it until January 2023, when Safe Energy Ireland took over (selectra.ie). Safe Energy Ireland runs the Register of Gas Installers scheme on behalf of the CRU (Gas Networks Ireland). Some engineers' vans and websites still say RGII.
What certificate should an RGI give you?
A Declaration of Conformance, also called a completion certificate, straight after the work. "All RGIs must provide their customers with a Declaration of Conformance Certificate" (CRU). There are three (rgi.ie):
| Certificate | For | Example |
|---|---|---|
| CERT 1 | New or existing gas installations needing a new meter | A new gas connection |
| CERT 2 | Boiler replacement where a gas meter is already fitted | A new boiler |
| CERT 3 | All other gas works with a meter already fitted | A service, a repair, a safety check, pipework |
The RGI gives you the original white copy. If they refuse, Safe Energy Ireland has a complaint form for it (rgi.ie).
What if the installer isn't on the register?
Don't let them work on the gas. If someone has done gas work without being registered, or has said they're an RGI when they aren't, Safe Energy Ireland takes reports of alleged illegal gas works. A complaint about the safety of work by an RGI goes on its complaint form; the RGI scheme "does not have a role in disputes of a commercial nature", so a row over price isn't for it (rgi.ie).
Should I get more than one price?
Safe Energy Ireland suggests contacting at least three RGIs "to compare cost, quality and service issues before entering into any contract" (rgi.ie). The published prices of 24 Dublin engineers are on boiler service prices; most charge €110–€135.
Does this apply to oil boilers?
No. Oil isn't gas work, so the RGI register doesn't cover it. Oil technicians register with OFTEC, whose competent person scheme operates in the UK and the Republic of Ireland; its technicians take an approved training course and assessment and are inspected regularly (oftec.org). OFTEC has its own search (find a technician). More on oil boilers.
Who we pass your request to
Boiler Service Dublin is an introduction service. We don't service boilers and we don't hold an RGI registration. We pass your request to one boiler engineer who covers your part of Dublin. Ask them for their RGI number when they ring, and check it on rgi.ie before the visit.
The law
Only an RGI works on gas
By law, only a Registered Gas Installer (RGI) can work on a gas boiler in your home (CRU). The register is run by Safe Energy Ireland for the CRU. Ask to see the engineer's RGI ID card, or check their name on rgi.ie.
- Gas boiler: only an RGI
- Oil boiler: ask for OFTEC

FAQ
Questions people ask
How do I check if a gas installer is registered in Ireland?
Search the installer's name on the register at rgi.ie, or search by county and pick your Dublin postal district (rgi.ie). A real RGI is listed there, carries an RGI ID card with their name, registration number, the date it's valid to and a photo, and gives you a Declaration of Conformance certificate after the work.
Is it illegal to service a gas boiler without being an RGI?
Yes. Safe Energy Ireland says it is illegal for anybody other than a Registered Gas Installer to service your boiler, and the CRU says all gas work in a home, natural gas or LPG, must be done by an RGI.
What's the difference between RGI and RGII?
None in practice. RGII, the Register of Gas Installers of Ireland, ran the register until January 2023, when Safe Energy Ireland took over. It's still the RGI register, run for the CRU.
What should be on an RGI ID card?
The installer's name, registration number (in the form R1234), the date it's valid to and a photo.
What certificate do I get after a boiler service?
A CERT 3 Declaration of Conformance from the RGI, the original white copy, straight after the work.
Who registers oil boiler technicians?
OFTEC. Its competent person scheme operates in the UK and the Republic of Ireland. The RGI register is for gas only.

Before you send it
Price, time and who rings
What will it cost?
Most Dublin engineers charge €110–€135 for a gas boiler service, and published oil service prices run €80 to €220 (re-read 1 November 2026). The engineer gives you a price on the phone, before anything is booked.
Is VAT in the price?
Often the price doesn't say. Only 3 of the businesses we checked state it, so ask for the price with VAT.
How long does the service take?
Most gas boiler services take around 45 to 60 minutes, Bord Gáis Energy says. An older boiler, or one in a tight hot press, can take longer.
Does sending this commit me to anything?
No. It's free, and nothing is booked until you agree a price and a time with the engineer.
Will lots of firms ring me?
No. Your details go to one boiler engineer who covers your part of Dublin, not to a list.
What if nobody rings?
Email hello@boilerservicedublin.ie with your area and we'll follow it up.
Is the engineer registered?
By law only a Registered Gas Installer can service a gas boiler. Ask for their RGI number and check it on rgi.ie: how to check. Oil boilers are OFTEC work.
