Once a year, gas or oil. Safe Energy Ireland, which runs the gas register, says a gas boiler "needs to be serviced once a year, as recommended by the manufacturers" (rgi.ie), and OFTEC says at least once a year for oil (OFTEC).

Most gas boiler services take around 45 to 60 minutes, Bord Gáis Energy says, depending on the type and condition of the boiler; Energia says about 45 minutes.

How often should a gas boiler be serviced?

Once a year. Gas Networks Ireland: "You should have your boiler and other natural gas appliances serviced by a Registered Gas Installer once a year" (gasnetworks.ie). Safe Energy Ireland gives the reason: a serviced boiler burns the gas correctly, "reducing the risk of emmissions of poisonous Carbon Monoxide" (rgi.ie, quoted as written). Most makers' warranties ask for the same.

How often should an oil boiler be serviced?

At least once a year, by an OFTEC-registered technician (OFTEC). Oil burners also need a new nozzle and a filter on a service. See oil boiler service and oil boilers in Dublin.

How long does a boiler service take?

Around 45 to 60 minutes for most gas boilers (Bord Gáis Energy); Energia says about 45 minutes for its service (Energia). Bord Gáis Energy's price covers the first 45 minutes, then €25 per 15 minutes (Bord Gáis Energy), which tells you an older or awkward boiler can run over. Ask any engineer what their price covers.

Is a yearly boiler service the law?

For your own home, no law sets how often. What the law does say is who can do it: only a Registered Gas Installer can work on a gas boiler (CRU). For a rented home, the landlord must keep the gas installation in good repair and safe working order (S.I. No. 137 of 2019); see landlord gas safety certificates.

Boiler maintenance between services

Four things you can do yourself, from the makers' and Bord Gáis Energy's own advice:

  • Check the pressure gauge: 1 to 1.5 bar with the heating off, under 2.5 bar with it on (Vaillant). Top up with the filling loop if it's under 1 bar, and close the loop fully after (Bord Gáis Energy).
  • Bleed radiators that are cold at the top. Vaillant suggests once each season (Vaillant).
  • In a frost, thaw a frozen condensate pipe with warm water, not boiling, then reset the boiler (Bord Gáis Energy).
  • Test the carbon monoxide alarm, and keep the boiler's vents and flue clear.

When to call before the service is due

Don't wait for the yearly service if you smell gas, see soot around the boiler, notice a yellow or flickering flame, the boiler keeps failing or resetting, or there's a visible leak (Bord Gáis Energy). If you smell gas, leave the house and ring Gas Networks Ireland on 1800 20 50 50 from outside (Gas Networks Ireland). For anything else, see boiler repair.

The law

Only an RGI works on gas

By law, only a Registered Gas Installer (RGI) can work on a gas boiler in your home (CRU). The register is run by Safe Energy Ireland for the CRU. Ask to see the engineer's RGI ID card, or check their name on rgi.ie.

  • Gas boiler: only an RGI
  • Oil boiler: ask for OFTEC
  • A written record after every service
  • Smell gas? 1800 20 50 50, from outside
