Boiler Service Dublin terms explained in plain English

Definitions of the technical terms, parts and standards that come up on quotes and service sheets.

Flue Gas Analysis (Combustion Test)
Testing the exhaust gases inside the boiler flue test point with a calibrated digital analyser to measure carbon monoxide (CO in ppm), carbon dioxide (CO2%), flue temperature, and combustion ratio at minimum and maximum burner rates.
Condensate Trap Service
Removing and flushing the internal plastic siphon trap at the base of a condensing boiler to clear grey aluminium oxide or combustion sediment that could otherwise block drainage and trigger a lockout fault.
Gas Tightness (Soundness) Test
A manometer pressure-drop test carried out at the gas meter test nipple before and after servicing to verify that there is no detectable gas escape on the domestic installation pipework.
Working Gas Inlet Pressure
The live gas pressure measured in millibars (mbar) at the boiler gas valve test point while the burner is firing at maximum rate; a natural gas appliance in Ireland typically requires around 20 mbar at the meter and within tolerance at the appliance.
Ignition and Flame Rectification Electrode
The ceramic-insulated metal probes inside the combustion chamber that spark to light the burner and sense a micro-amp current through the flame; cleaning carbon or oxide build-up off the probe prevents intermittent F28/EA ignition lockouts.
Burner Seal and Combustion Chamber Gasket
The high-temperature graphite or silicone seal around the main burner door on a premix condensing boiler; inspected at every annual service for brittleness or scorching and replaced if worn to prevent products of combustion leaking into the case.
Expansion Vessel Pre-Charge (Bar)
The nitrogen or air cushion inside the boiler's internal red expansion vessel (normally 0.75 to 1.0 bar when system water pressure is zero); re-pressurising a flat vessel with a foot pump stops the system pressure from spiking to 3 bar and dripping outside.
Magnetic Filter Strip and Clean
Isolating the inline heating return filter, removing the neodymium magnet sleeve, washing accumulated black iron-oxide sludge out of the canister, and dosing fresh inhibitor if system water is topped up.
Primary Heat Exchanger Inspection
Checking the finned stainless-steel or cast-aluminium heat exchanger cell inside the combustion chamber for white scale deposits, blocked flue ways, or signs of weeping joints during an annual strip-down service.
Pressure Relief Valve (PRV) Discharge
The 3-bar safety valve connected to the 15 mm copper overflow pipe outside the wall; if the expansion vessel loses its air charge during the year, the PRV lifts at 3 bar and often needs cleaning or reseating to stop a slow pressure drop.
OFTEC Oil Nozzle and Photocell Service
On kerosene oil boilers, replacing the brass atomising nozzle with the exact gallon-per-hour and spray-angle rating, wiping the photoelectric flame eye, cleaning the blast tube and baffles, and setting pump pressure and smoke number.
Fan and Venturi Assembly
The variable-speed premix fan and air-gas venturi throat that draw combustion air and gas into a condensing boiler in a fixed ratio; brushing dust or debris from the venturi keeps the CO/CO2 ratio stable.
Carbon Monoxide (CO) Room Alarm Check
Testing the audible battery or hardwired EN 50291 carbon monoxide alarm in the room containing the boiler and checking its expiry date and placement height as part of the safety inspection.
RGII Declaration of Conformance (Cert 3)
The official Irish gas safety and servicing certificate issued by a Registered Gas Installer after servicing or repairing a domestic gas appliance, recording combustion readings and any safety observations.
Manufacturer Warranty Service Record
Completing the benchmark logbook in the back of the boiler manual (or logging the annual service digitally) with the installer's RGII or OFTEC registration number and flue gas readings to keep a 5-to-10-year manufacturer warranty valid.
